Spinal Cord Injuries (SCI)

Spinal cord Injuries occur when there is damage to the Spinal Cord, causing loss of function, including loss of movement, sensation and reflexes.  As the Spinal Cord is the ‘message highway’ between the brain and the body, SCIs are a life changing diagnosis that usually are accompanied with a lot of change and uncertainty. At Breaking Boundaries we have Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists experienced in assisting those with SCI to adapt to their new life, whilst continuing to push the boundaries of what is possible.  We work with individuals and their support teams to deliver focused, evidence-based therapy that is built around the person and their goals.

At Breaking Boundaries we offer multiple different therapy options designed to get you pushing the boundaries of rehabilitation and we continue to review research both in Australia and internationally to make sure we are providing the best possible therapy to individuals who push through our doors.

Some of our options are:

  1. Activity Based Therapy (ABT) – a program underpinned by the principles of neuroplasticity that includes dynamic weight bearing activities such as standing and locomotor training (both treadmill and overground).
  2. Exoskeleton sessions and early weightbearing/standing – early weight bearing and standing can assist in neural recovery below the level of injury and continuing to stand and weighbear is important for neuroplasticity as well as general maintenance of health and wellbeing.
  3. Specific strength and functional retraining to maximise functional recovery
  4. FES – functional electrical stimulation uses electrodes to help stimulate muscles that are not working properly on their own to assist in recovery or maintenance.
  5. Transfer training and wheelchair skills
  6. Adaptive sports and accessible technology
  7. Community access strategies and training, peer support
  8. Advanced AT prescription
  9. Adaptive pilates
  10. Movement based therapy
