Motor Neurone Disease (MND)

MND is a term for a group of progressive neurological disorders that damage cells responsible for essential muscle activity such as speaking, walking, breathing, and swallowing. In MND messages from nerve cells in the brain are transmitted to nerve cells in the brainstem and spinal cord, and then to muscles.

In MND, there are disruptions in these signals, causing gradual muscle loss and associated weakness.

At Breaking Boundaries, our Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists aim to slow the progression of MND.  We will work with the individual and their family and support systems to develop a program that targets their individual needs and concerns.  We work closely with MND Australia and MND NSW to make sure that individuals with MND are well supported and continue to explore life.

MND-specific therapies that can be incorporated into your therapy include:

  • Range of motion exercises
  • Gait training
  • Limb relaxation
  • Hydrotherapy
  • Trunk balance
  • Respiratory management
  • Positioning and pain management
