Concussion

A concussion is an injury to the head as a result of serious impact (shake or hit) that injures the brain.

The force of the impact causes the brain to push against the skull causing bruising, swelling and damage to the brain cells.  This can lead to changes in how the brain creates various chemicals, causing many symptoms and issues.

Even after you have sought medical attention for the initial head injury, you may notice ongoing symptoms and issues that continue to present days, weeks and sometimes months after the head injury/concussion. These symptoms do not always show up immediately after the accident so it is important to seek medical and allied health treatment following an accident that causes impact to the head. Some of the symptoms may be:

  • Dizziness
  • Imbalance / Unsteady
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Fatigue and Tiredness
  • Light Sensitivity
  • Problems Concentrating
  • Problems Remembering Things
  • Blurred and/or Double Vision
  • Delayed Responses and challenging word finding

At Breaking Boundaries we have Physiotherapists and Exercise Physiologists’ with specialised training and experience that can assess your concussion and support you through the  post-Concussion treatment to manage these symptoms and support you in returning back to physical activity, work and daily activities.

Part of post-concussion treatment with the Breaking Boundaries team will include education about your injuries and helping you understand and manage your symptoms.

As part of your therapy you will learn:

  • Activity guidelines about pacing, activity control and return to activities.  This helps to give your brain the time it needs to heal and recover. Once certain markers are met, then you can start to reintroduce activity in a safe and sustainable manner.
  • Vestibular strategies – Vestibular strategies aim to reduce dizziness and problems with balance post concussion.
  • Strategies to manage post concussion headaches.
  • How to slowly strengthen the brain and improve its functioning through various exercises and  how to progress these as your brain recovers and gets stronger.
  • How to implement a gradual return to normal routines and activities as you improve and recover.
